Second City Sax has three new players joining Jonathan!

Soprano : Jonathan Middle


Jonathan has been playing music for 60+ years, starting on piano in his youth (reaching Grade VIII), branching out into electric guitar in his teens, and taking up saxophone in 1992.  Since coming to Birmingham in 1997, Jonathan has studied jazz saxophone with Colin Crabb who helped him to achieve distinction in Grade VIII in 2007 and an ALCM Diploma in 2013.  Jonathan also plays tenor sax in the University of Birmingham Wind Band and soprano sax in the University of Birmingham Saxophone Choir, as well as keyboards in Earlswood trio.

Alto: Flo Jones

Florence (Flo) has been playing Alto Saxophone since she was 11 years old, after inheriting a love of Big Band jazz from her Grandfather. Despite being classically trained to grade 8, Flo has always loved jazz playing on both Alto and Baritone. Before moving to Birmingham, she took part in a number of jazz bands and ensembles, including leading the Kirkby Lonsdale QEJazz Band. As a first year Liberal Arts student, Flo is the Quartet’s newest and youngest member, who is really excited about developing her playing alongside the other Quartet members.

Tenor : Zoë Goodwin

Zoë Goodwin is a third year Music student at the University of Birmingham. They are a clarinettist, saxophonist and conductor from London, performing in various ensembles with their local music school since the age of 9, and now playing in the UoBMS Wind Band and UoBMS Saxophone Choir. Having been involved in other performing arts since the age of 4, Zoë has a keen interest in musical theatre, and has performed reed parts in amateur productions of shows such as ‘Annie', ‘Cats', and 'The King and I'. Zoë is incredibly excited to be part of Second City Saxophone Quartet.

Baritone: Felicity (Flick) Hemming

Felicity is in her second year studying Modern Languages at the University of Birmingham.  From a young age, music has been an important part of her life, not only as a means of being creative, but also as a way of relaxing.  After being introduced to the delights of the piano at the age of 8, Felicity has taken every opportunity to explore playing various instruments with a variety of different people. Before University, she played the clarinet as a member of the Bradford Youth Orchestra whilst also playing saxophone as a member of the Leeds Youth Jazz and Rock Orchestra (LYJRO).  Felicity also formed a jazz saxophone quintet during her sixth form years.  As well as playing baritone in Second City Sax, she enjoys playing with the University Saxophone Choir.
